The Hungry Lizard

I was reading through my notebook of poems today. The one that stood out to me the most was The Hungry Lizard, which I wrote in 2011. It made me realize I should go outside and notice the little things in nature more often. Here’s the poem:

My lizard, he was hungry,

paced back and forth in his cage.

He jumped and tried to climb

Most crickets shied in his rage.

He darted, but missed,

then rested, and let his head be kissed

by the warm sun.

Then he up and ran again,

and the crickets tried to abscond

but the largest cricket of them all

scoffed at the lizard, and stood tall,

then jumped onto the whiptail’s back,

and rode away with a tip of his hat.

My Favorite (Yarncraft) Things

Rolling Alpaca Yarn

Haloed alpaca as soft as small kittens

Bright kettle cozies and colorwork mittens

Brown cardboard packages filled up with string

These are a few of my favorite things.

Cream colored cotton and crisp drapey linen

Jewel tones and gradients and tonals that glisten

Lace shawls that glimmer like dragonfly wings

These are a few of my favorite things.

When the yarn barfs

When a hook’s lost

When I’m feeling sad

I simply remember my favorite things

And then I don’t feel

so bad!

What are your favorite yarncraft things?

To Meet the Stars

I would love to meet the stars,

visit nebulae, or walk on Mars.

To blast from Earth to outer space,

meet a creature from an alien race,

or play a stellar game of chase.

Oh, I’d just adore

to wander and explore

different worlds,

planets galore.

To go over yonder

to that galaxy,

and wonder

at the marvelous universe.

Knowing my God created all this,

that is heavenly bliss.

Above is a poem I wrote in 2010. I found it in my poem notebook, made a few quick edits, and decided to share it.

I used to be quite prolific at poetry, but a lot of my poems felt forced. I realize now that I had dragged them out of my head. “To Meet the Stars” is one of a few that came from my heart. I’ll never stop loving the sky.
